There’s a secret that real writers know that wannabe writers don’t, and the secret is this: It’s not the writing part that’s hard. What’s hard is sitting down to write. What keeps us from sitting down is Resistance. – Steven Pressfield
Resistance overwhelms when you try to take a step forward. Think about the entrepreneurship venture that was never started or the yoga mat that’s picking up dust. Resistance finds away in the form of procrastination, self-sabotage, fear and doubt. Resistance is the obstruction from our current self and our full potential.
Resistance is Evil
Recently, writing, journaling and meditation have been challenging tasks to accomplish. Thoughts of picking up my pen and journal seemed pointless. Meditation felt loud. Writing hit a rescission. Resistance attacked my aspirations. Resistance wants stagnation. Resistance had left my dream projects on the side of the road.
Resistance can be Beaten
The aspiring writer or painter must know about Resistance and how to beat it. This awareness grants an individual power against the enemy. Awareness that is born through hearing the internal voice, but not listening.
Acknowledgement of Resistance through meta-cognition points us toward our true north. When I’m faced with an overwhelming wave of Resistance I know this is the way I need to walk.
Stephen Pressfield the Author of “The War of Art” states that the way to beat Resistance is Turing Pro.
Becoming a professional is an ideology where we treat our creative endeavour with a working man’s mentality. Rain or shine the Pro gets to work. Work is treated with only professionalism. The Pro is a silent warrior that does not actively seek fame and fortune but knows it is the byproduct of the mundane task of sitting down and writing.
In the texts of the Bhagavad-Gita, when Krishna instructed Arjuna that we have a right to our labour, but not to the fruits of our labour. This represents the Professionals’ mindset. The Pro does not seek a materialistic reward but works to feed her mind, body and soul.
The Professional knows gratification may only come when the project is completed. Once completed the Pro does not take success or failure personally, but takes feedback objectively and gets back to work. Starting the creative process once again.
The Professional enters a flow state through the act of sitting down and writing with an empty mind. This state grants the aspiring artist to a network of ideas. This state is the creation of art and wisdom through creativity. The Pro seeks this state and worships its infinite power.
The battle between the Professional and Resistance is being fought every day. The Professional knows the tricks Resistance plays and finds equanimity. My awareness of Resistance has enlightened my spirit. My mind is a vehicle for creativity and new ideas just by the act of showing up and writing every day. You too can find your voice against resistance and win the battle.
